Nana Akua Addo Responds To Claims She Stole AMVCA Cathedral Gown Concept
Nana Akua Addo is facing backlash after a Paris-based designer accused her of copying the concept behind her viral cathedral-inspired look at the 2026 AMVCA awards in Nigeria.
The Ghanaian actress and style icon is now at the center of controversy after the designer alleged that Nana Akua used a design idea originally created by her brand for the outfit she wore to the event.
Akua Addo made headlines at the 12th Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards on 9 May 2026 at Eko Hotels & Suites, where she arrived in a series of extravagant looks. It was her cathedral-inspired gown, modeled after Cologne Cathedral in Germany, that quickly became the most talked-about moment online.
While many fashion fans praised her bold red-carpet appearance, the conversation shifted after fashion house Almée Couture publicly claimed that Nana Akua used a concept they had developed for her.
In a statement, the designer said the actress initially reached out to create her AMVCA outfit and shared her vision for the look. Almée Couture said it spent considerable time, creativity, and resources developing the artistic direction, sketch, silhouette, and structural details for the gown. The brand added that although the collaboration was later canceled and the deposit refunded due to creative differences, the final outfit worn at the AMVCA closely matched the concept they had created.
