Popular Nollywood actor and director, Ikechukwu Mitchel Ogbonna (better known as IK Ogbonna), has finally broken his emotional silence following the tragic passing of his closest friend and colleague, Alexx Ekubo.
Alexx Ekubo passed away on May 11, 2026, at Evercare Hospital in Lagos. His family later revealed that his death followed a brave, private battle with complications from advanced metastatic kidney cancer (Stage 4). Throughout the burial rites and final funeral proceedings, IK Ogbonna chose absolute silence, a boundary many fans and industry insiders respected as his deeply personal way of processing the immense grief.

“You never truly understand the weight of death until it’s your own person inside that vehicle," Ogbonna wrote. "Until the phone stops ringing forever. Until the chair beside you remains empty. Until the conversations you thought you had time to finish suddenly become memories.”
He admitted that the past two months have been a painful journey of questioning reality, dealing with profound loss, and trying to understand God's timing. The two actors frequently discussed a shared future, laughing about growing old together, collaborating on future films, launching new business ventures, and watching their children grow.

Amidst the heartbreak, Ogbonna expressed finding a sense of peace by focusing on the vibrant, impactful way Ekubo chose to live his 40 years on Earth.
“My greatest comfort is knowing that you truly lived. You didn’t merely exist. You loved. You gave. You laughed loudly. You showed up. The biggest house still becomes empty. The finest car eventually parks. Every title fades... But kindness, love, character. The way you make people feel. Those things continue walking long after you’re gone.”
